{"id":5742,"date":"2022-05-11T02:46:00","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T22:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/?p=5742"},"modified":"2023-10-17T15:58:43","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T11:58:43","slug":"addressing-gender-biased-sex-selection-and-related-harmful-practices-in-the-south-caucasus-support-for-regional-national-and-south-south-interventions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/en\/completed_projects_eng\/addressing-gender-biased-sex-selection-and-related-harmful-practices-in-the-south-caucasus-support-for-regional-national-and-south-south-interventions\/","title":{"rendered":"Addressing Gender-Biased Sex Selection and Related Harmful Practices in the South Caucasus: Support for Regional, National and South\u2013South Interventions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Phase II of the \u201c<strong>Addressing Gender-biased Sex Selection (GBSS) and Related Harmful Practices in the South Caucasus<\/strong>\u201d Programme aims to scale up the successful results and e\ufb00ective practices achieved during Phase I, address gaps, and foster gender-transformative approaches to eliminate discriminatory social norms and harmful practices by scaling up e\ufb00ective, evidence-based interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Awareness raising campaigns, capacity building activities and conversation around the topic as well women&#8217;s rights and gender equality will be at the core of the interventions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facts and figures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>GBSS causes the skewed sex ratios at birth (SRB) <strong>above the natural SRB of 102 to 106 boys per 100 girls <\/strong>which has a damaging e\ufb00ect on the society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As a result of the interventions implemented over years, in 2021 Armenia&#8217;s SRB was estimated at <strong>108.8 boys to 100 girls<\/strong>, which represents a considerable progress in relation to the rates from early 2000&#8217;s (<strong>120 boys per 100 girls<\/strong>). However, even at this pace, the SRB may not reach its natural level before 2030.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In 2020, demographic estimates pointed to a <strong>13% excess of males <\/strong>among the population below twenty years.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To achieve the objectives of the Programme, activities in the following areas are carried out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expanding the knowledge base and data including conducting of nationwide survey on GBSS;<\/li>\n<li>Capacity building for relevant stakeholders on monitoring and evaluation;<\/li>\n<li>Supporting the government in implementing, monitoring and evaluating the 2020-2023 Plan on Prevention of GBSS;<\/li>\n<li>Sensitizing the media, population, and decision-makers through capacity building and public awareness raising;<\/li>\n<li>Active engagement of young men and future fathers as lead advocates and agents of change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The \u201cAddressing Gender-Biased Sex Selection and Related Harmful Practices in the South Caucasus: Support for Regional, National and South\u2013South Interventions\u201d project is implemented by UNFPA in partnership with OxYGen Foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The Project is funded by the European Union and UNFPA.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Project implementation period: 09.09.2020 \u2013 08.09.2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5752\" src=\"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Logo-line-300x70.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"74\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Logo-line-300x70.jpg 300w, https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Logo-line-1024x240.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Logo-line-768x180.jpg 768w, https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Logo-line.jpg 1063w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phase II of the \u201cAddressing Gender-biased Sex Selection (GBSS) and Related Harmful Practices in the South Caucasus\u201d Programme aims to scale up the successful results and e\ufb00ective practices achieved during&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":5743,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-5742","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-completed_projects_eng"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
