{"id":37456,"date":"2021-09-08T17:56:03","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T13:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/%d5%af%d5%a1%d5%b6%d5%a1%d5%b6%d6%81-%d5%a1%d5%b5%d5%ac%d6%87%d5%bd-%d5%b9%d5%a5%d5%b6%d6%84-%d5%af%d5%a1%d6%80%d5%b8%d5%b2-%d5%a1%d5%b6%d5%af%d5%b5%d5%b8%d6%82%d5%b6-%d5%b4%d5%b2%d5%a5\/"},"modified":"2021-09-08T18:01:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T14:01:09","slug":"women-must-no-longer-be-squeezed-into-a-small-corner-landmark-forum-declares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/en\/women-must-no-longer-be-squeezed-into-a-small-corner-landmark-forum-declares\/","title":{"rendered":"Women must no longer be \u2018squeezed into a small corner\u2019, landmark Forum declares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a bid to put gender equality at the heart of COVID recovery, UN Women kicked off a three-day \u201clandmark effort\u201d in Paris on Wednesday, aiming to lay out ambitious investments and policies to bridge the chasm between where women stand in the world today, and where they should be, by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGender equality is essentially about power, and power in a world that is still largely male dominated, with a culture that is still largely patriarchal\u201d, Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said at the Generation Equality Forum, launching a \u201cfive-year action journey\u201d, based on the UN Global Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that \u201cpower is very rarely given.\u202fYou have to take it\u201d, he stressed as one of his five priorities, the importance of parity to redistribute power and create the necessary conditions for true equality.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37444\" src=\"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/02.jpg 700w, https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/02-300x136.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UN chief said that to achieve equal rights, discriminatory laws around the world must be repealed and transformed into \u2018de facto\u2019 equality.<\/p>\n<p>He said women in the informal economy, were \u201cpaying a heavy price for the pandemic\u201d, also highlighting economic equality in pay, employment, and social protections.<\/p>\n<p>Noting a surge in violence against women and girls during COVID, Mr. Guterres said that putting an end to it must be \u201ca central element of all policies and all of our objectives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he highlighted the importance of intergenerational dialogue as \u201canother fundamental instrument for gender equality\u201d to allow young people to be a part of decision-making in today\u2019s digital society.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-37446\" src=\"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/03.jpg 700w, https:\/\/oxygen.org.am\/website_8687afc8\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/03-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women worth more than a quarter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In her statement, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said that \u201cwomen everywhere in the world are squeezed into a small corner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She highlighted how they make up a quarter of all managers, parliamentarians, climate change negotiators and \u201cless than one quarter of those who negotiate peace agreements\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne quarter is not enough. One quarter is not equality. And we know that when women have the power to raise our voices, assert our rights, and rebuild economies, everyone will be better off\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Marija Pej\u010dinovi\u0107 Buri\u0107, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, drew attention to the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women, or the Istanbul Convention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, we saw a surge in domestic violence during COVID lockdowns.
