The “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign kicks off

Today, on the  International Day for the Elimination of  Violence against Women, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign kicks off.

Since 1991, initiated by the United Nations, every year from November 25 to December 10 – the International Human Rights Day, people all over the world raise their voice against violence against women and girls.

This year, the 16 Days Campaign is marked under “UNITE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls” slogan.

The “Women in Politics Project” joins the 16 Days of Activism campaign. During the next sixteen days, materials on the topic will be published on our Facebook page to emphasize the importance of joint efforts and women’s leadership development in combating gender-based violence.

Statistics

According to the UN official data:

Violence against women and girls remains the most prevalent human rights violation in the world.  Due to this, 1 out of every 3 women is victimized, and this indicator has hardly changed over the past decade.

More than 60% of women subjected to violence do not ask for any kind of assistance.

On average, every hour more than five women or girls are killed by a member of their family. This means that on average, every 11 minutes one woman or girl in the world is killed by her relatives or intimate partner.

In Armenia:

  • 14.8% of 15-59  aged women who had ever have an intimate partner were subjected to physical violence over their lifetime – indicates the “Survey on Domestic Violence against Women”.
  • Meantime, most of the women – 67%, takes no step for protection or response.

❗️ According to the RA police data:

🟠 During the months of January-October 2022, 295 cases of domestic violence were recorded in Armenia.
🟠 More domestic violence cases are recorded in the capital city of Yerevan, followed by Shirak, Armavir, Kotaik, and Ararat regions.
❗️ According to the data of the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women:
💔 Over this year, 1️⃣0️⃣ women have been killed in Armenia due to domestic violence. ➡️ https://bit.ly/3u02XVL
🟠 During the months of January-August of this year, the Coalition hotline received 4808 calls, whereas in the preceding years there were 4000-5000 calls made during the entire year.

Promote women’s leadership to prevent violence against women

Within the context of the #16Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the importance of expanding women’s leadership is emphasized as a crucial means to promote gender equality and to prevent gender-based violence.

The UN Women states that women’s engagement in decision-making helps ensure gender mainstreaming and primary consideration of women’s and girls’ needs when defining and implementing emergency response, humanitarian, social, and all other kinds of policies.

Starting today and till December 10, in the frames of the 16 Days of Activism, we will be presenting through our Facebook page the outlook of women involved in the public and political life of different Marzes of Armenia on women’s rights, discrimination and violence against women, women’s leadership, and other issues.
